Garlic Trial shows no cholesterol-lowering effect; other cardiovascular benefits documented

Researchers at Stanford University reported that reasonable doses of fresh garlic, plus 2 popular garlic supplements, failed to lower LDL cholesterol in 6 months in patients with moderately high levels of cholesterol (130-190 mg/dl).

Despite the failure of garlic to lower LDL cholesterol in this trial, there are still other cardiovascular benefits of garlic, a chief one being its documented ability to inhibit and even reverse the buildup of arterial plaque (atherosclerosis).

There are 6 trials that support this action. There is another potential benefit of garlic, helping reduce the incidence of certain cancers, particularly cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. The support for this is compelling, including publications from the National Cancer Institute.
