1. Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing of the foodstuff. I caught him and said, "I will take you to Allah's Messenger (PBUH)!" Then Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), "(Please don't take me to Allah's Messenger (PBUH) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you). When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-ul-Kursi, (V.255)for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn." (When the Prophet (PBUH) heard the story) he said (to me, "He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.6, Hadith No.530)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Riba (Usury or Interest):

Usury is of two major kinds; (A) Riba An-Nasi'a i.e. interest on lent money; (B) Riba Al-Fadl, i.e. taking a superior thing of the same kind of goods by giving more of the same kind of goods of inferior quality, e.g., dates of superior quality for dates of inferior quality in great amounts.

  • Narrated 'Aun bin Abu Juhaifah Radiyallhu Anh: My father bought a slave who practised the profession of cupping. (My father broke the slave's instruments of cupping). I asked my father why he had done so. He replied, "The Prophet (PBUH) forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, or getting tattooed and receiving or giving Riba (usury), and cursed the picture-makers." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.3, Hadith No.299)
  • Narrated Abu Juhaifah that he had bought a slave whose profession was cupping and then said: The Prophet (PBUH) forbade taking the price of blood and the price of a dog and the earnings of a prostitute, and cursed the one who took or gave Riba (usury), and the lady who tattooed others or got herself tattooed, and the picture-maker. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.7, Hadith No.845).
  • Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri Radiyallahu Anh: Once Bilal brought Barni (a kind of) dates to the Prophet (PBUH) and the Prophet (PBUH) asked him, "From where have you brought these?" Bilal replied, "I had some inferior kind of dates and exchanged two Sa' of it for one Sa' of Barni dates, in order to give it to the Prophet (PBUH) to eat." Thereupon the Prophet (PBUH) said, "Beware! Beware! This is definitely Riba (usury)! This is definitely Riba (usury)! Don't do so, but if you want to buy (a superior kind of dates) sell the inferior kind of dates for money and then, buy the superior kind of dates with that money." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.3, Hadith No.506)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Regarding a Debt or a Loan

  • Narrated 'Aishah Radiyallahu Anha: The Prophet (PBUH) bought some foodstuff on credit for a limited period and mortgaged his armour for it. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.3, Hadith No.686)
  • Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said; "A man used to give loans to the people, and used to say to his servant, 'If the debtor is poor, forgive him, so that Allah may forgive us.' So when he met Allah (after his death), Allah forgave him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.687)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah (Verses 285 -286)

Narrated 'Abu Mas'ud Al-Badri Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said, "Whosoever recited the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, that will be sufficient for him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.5, Hadith No.345)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Speaking in Cradle

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "None spoke in cradle but three: (The first was) Jesus.

(The second child was): There was a man from Bani Israel called Juraij. While hewas offering prayer, his mother came and called him. He said (to himself), "Shall I answer her or keep on praying?" (He went on praying and did not answer her). His mother said, "O Allah! Do not let him die till he sees the faces of prostitutes." So while he was in his hermitage, a lady came and sought to seduce him, but he refused. So she went to a shepherd and presented herself to him to commit illegal sexual intercourse with her, and then later she gave birth to a child and claimed that it belonged to Juraij. The people, therefore, came to him and dismantled his hermitage and expelled him out of it and abused him. Juraij performed ablution and offered prayer, and then came to the child and said: "O child! Who is your father?" The child replied, "The shepherd" (after hearing this) the people said, "We shall rebuild your hermitage of gold, "but he said: "No, of nothing but mud."

(The third was the hero of the following story): A lady from Bani Israel was nursing her child at her breast when a handsome rider passed by her. She said, "O Allah! Make my child like him." On that the child left her breast and facing the rider said: "O Allah! Do not make me like him." The child then started to suck her breast again. [Abu Hurairah further said, "As if I were now looking at the Prophet (PBUH) sucking his finger (in way of demonstration.")]. After a while they (some people) passed by, with a lady slave and she (i.e. the child's mother) said, "O Allah! Do not make my child like this (slave-girl)!" On that the child left her breast, and said, "O Allah! Make me like her." When she asked why, the child replied, "The rider is one of the tyrants while this slave-girl is falsely accused of theft and illegal sexual intercourse." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.645)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Descending of Prophet Jesus (Son of Maryam) Alaihissalam

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, surely ['Isa (Jesus)], the son of Maryam (Mary) Alaihissalam will shortly descend amongst you (Muslims), and will judge mankind justly by the law of the Qur'an (as a just ruler); he will break the cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizyah (i.e. taxation taken from non-Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and whatever is in it." Abu Hurairah added : "If you wish, you can recite (this Verse of the Qur'an): "And there is none of the people of Scriptures (Jews and Christians) but must believe in him [i.e. 'Isa (Jesus) Alaihissalam as a Messenger of Allah and a human being] before his ['Isa (Jesus) Alaihissalam or a Jew's or Christian's] death, and on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Isa (Jesus) Alaihissalam] will be a witness against them." (4:159).

(See Fath Al-Bari, Vol.7, Page No.302) According to the quotation of Kushmaihani there is the word Al-Jizyah instead of Al-Harb. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.657)

* The Jizyah (a tax imposed on non-Muslims who would keep their own religion, rather than embrace Islam) will not be accepted by 'Isa (Jesus) Alahissalam, but all people will be required to embrace Islam and there will be no other alternative.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Reverting from Islam

Narrated Anas Radiyallahu Anh: There was a christian who embraced Islam and read Surat-Al-Baqara and Al-Imran, and he used to write (the revelations) for the Prophet (PBUH). Later on he reverted to Christianity again, and he used to say: "Muhammad PBUH knows nothing but what I have written for him." Then Allah caused him to die, and the people buried him, but in the morning they saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is the act of Muhammad PBUH and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and took his body out because he had run away from them." They again dug the grave deeply for him, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is an act of Muhammad PBUH and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and took his body outside it, for he had run away from them." They dug the grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. So they believed that what had befallen him was not done by human beings and had to leave him thrown (on the ground). (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.814).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Exaageration in Praising

Narrated 'Umar Radiyallahu Anh: I heard the Prophet PBUH saying, "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Maryam (Mary)*, for I am only a slave. So call me the slae of Allah and His Messenger." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.654)

* The Christians overpraised 'Isa (Jesus) Alaihissalam till they took him as a god besides Allah.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is Obligatory to have Belief in the Messengership of the Prophet (Muhammad PBUH).

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: "By Him (Allah) in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, there is none from amongst the Jews and the Christians (of these present nations) who hears about me and then dies without believing in the Message with which I have been sent (i.e. Islamic Mon otheism), but he will be from the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire." (Sahih Muslim, the Book of Faith, Vol.1, Hadith No.153. S.S.M.H 20).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Faith in Islam

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: One day while the Prophet PBUH was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Jibrael (Gabriel) Alaihissalam came and asked, "What is Faith?" Allah's Messenger PBUH replied, "Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His messengers, and to believe in Resurrection." *Then he further asked, "What is Islam?" Allah's Messenger PBUH replied, "To worship Allah Alone and none else, to perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), to give the Zakat and to observe Saum (fast) during the month of Ramadan," ** then he further asked, "What is Ihsan (perfection)?" Allah's Messenger PBUH replied, "To worship Allah SWT as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you." Then he further asked, "When will the Hour be established?" Allah's Messenger PBUH replied, "The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its protents:

(1) When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master.

(2) When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings. And the Hour is one of the five things which nobody knows except Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) then recited: "Verily, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (Alone)." (31:34). Then that man (Gabriel Alaihissalam) left and the Prophet PBUH asked his Companions to call him back, but they could not see him. Then the Prophet PBUH said, "That was (angel) Gabriel Alaihissalam who came to teach people their religion.

Abu Abdullah Radiyallahu Anh said: He (the Prophet PBUH) considered all that as a part of faith. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.1, Hadith No.47).

* In this Hadith, only 4 articles are mentioned, while in another Hadith, 6 articles are mentioned: (i) Allah, (ii) His Angels, (iii) His Books (The Torah, The Gospel, The Qur'an and all the other Holy Books revealed by Allah), (iv) His Messengers, (v) Day of Resurrection and (vi) Al-Qadar (Divine Pre-ordainments), i.e. whatever Allah has ordained, must come to pass.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Narrated Anas bin Malik Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Prophet (PBUH) used to say, "A disbeliever will be asked: 'Suppose you had as much gold as to fill the earth, would you offer it to ransom yourself (from the Hell-Fire)?' He will reply, 'Yes.' Then it will be said to him, 'You were asked for something easier than that (to join none in worship with Allah i.e. to accept Islam, but you refused).'" (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.8, Hadith No.546)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been narrated by Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh in the Hadith Books (At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Abu Dawud) that the Prophet PBUH said: "The Jews and Christians were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two religious sects, and this nation will be divided into seventy-three religious sects -- all in Hell, except one, and that one is the one on which I and my Companions are today [i.e. following the Qur'an and the Prophet's Sunnah (legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements of the Prophet PBUH)]."

13. True Believers in Islam

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: The Verse: "You [true believers in Islamic Monotheism and real followers of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his Sunnah] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind" means, the best of the people for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam (and thereby save them from the eternal punishment in the Hell-fire and make them enter Paradise int he Hereafter). (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.6, Hadith No.80)

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Allah wonders at those people who will enter Paradise in chains."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.254)

* The people referred to here may be the prisoners of war who were captured and chained by the Muslims and their imprisonment was the cause of their conversion to Islam. So, it is as if their chains were the means of winning Paradise.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A man from the dwellers of the desert came (to the Prophet PBUH) and said: "O Muhammad, your messenger came to us and told us your claim that Allah had sent you (as a Prophet). 39. Regarding the Words of ALLAH: "They ask you concerning menstruation"

Anas bin Malik Radiyallahu Anh narrated: When a woman menstruated, the Jews did not dine with her, nor did they cohabit with her. So the Companions of the Prophet PBUH asked him about menstruation and Allah revealed: "They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is harmful (thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them until they have purified (from menses and have taken bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you. Truly, Allah loves those who repent to Him and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts and bodies for their prayers, etc.)." (2:22) The Messenger of Allah PBUH said: "Do everything except intercourse." The Jews heard of that and said: "This man does not want to leave anything we do, without opposing us in it."

Usaid bin Hudair and 'Abbad bin Bishr came and said: "O Messenger of Allah: The Jews say such and such. Shall we have intercourses with our wives during menses?" The face of the Messenger of Allah changed and we though that he was angry with them, but when they went out, a gift of milk was sent to the Messenger of Allah PBUH. He (the Prophet PBUH) called them and gave them a drink, whereby they knew that he was not angry with them. (Source: Summarized Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, Hadith No.171)

40. How a woman should take a bath after menstruation and Janabah

Aishah Radiyallahu Anha narrated: Asma' Radiyallahu Anha asked the Prophet PBUH about the bath which is taken after menstruation. He said: "Everyone amongst you should use water and (the leaves of) the lote-tree and cleanse herself well, and then pour water on her head and rub it vigorously until it reaches the roots of the hair. Then she should pour water on herself. Afterwards she should take a piece of cotton scented with perfume and cleanse herself with it." Asma' Radiyallahu Anha said: "How do I clean myself with that?" Upon this he (the Messenger of Allah PBUH) said: "Subhan Allah! Cleanse yourself with it." 'Aishah Radiyallahu Anha said (in a lower tone), "Clean the trace of blood."

Then she asked him about bathing after Janabah. He said: "She should take water and wash herself well (or: complete the Wudu') and then (pour water) on her head and rub it until it reaches the roots of the hair (of her) head and then pour water on herself." 'Aishah Radiyallahu Anha said: "How good are the women of Ansar. Shyness does not prevent them from learning the Deen (religion)." (Source: Summarized Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, Hadith No.172)

41. The Virtue of Fasting

Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh narrated that the Messenger of Allah PBUH Said: "Allah the Exalted and Glorious said: 'All acts of worship a man does, belong to him, except fasting which is for Me, and I will reward for it. 'Fasting is a shield. When anyone of you is fasting, he should not engage in sexual activities nor raise the voice; or if anyone reviles him or quarrels with him, he should say: 'I am fasting.' By Him, in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, the breath of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah on the Day of Resurrection than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts has two occasions of joy, one when he breaks the fast, and one when he meets his Rubb, he is glad with his fast." (Bukhari 1904). 42. The excellence of the month of Ramadan

Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh narrated that the Messenger of Allah PBUH said: "When the month of Ramadan comes, the gates of Jannah are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the satans are chained." (Bukhari 1899) (Source: Summarized Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, Hadith 572)

43. One should not fast a day or two days ahead of Ramadan

Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh narrated that the Messenger of Allah PBUH said: "Do not fast a day or two days ahead of Ramadan except for a person who is in the habit of observing a particular day's fast, he may fast." (Bukhari 1914) (Source: Summarized Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, Hadith 573)

44. What Allah has made compulsory

Narrated Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah: A bedouin with unkempt hair came to Allah's Messenger PBUH and said, "O Allah's Messenger! Inform me what Allah has made compulsory for me as regards the Salat (prayers)." He replied: "You have to offer perfectly the five compulsory Salat (prayers) in a day and night (24 hours), unless you want to pray the Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory)". The bedouin further asked, "Inform me what Allah has made compulsory for me as regards Saum (fast)." He replied, "You have to fast during the whole month of Ramadan, unless you want to fast more as Nawafil." The bedouin further asked, "Tell me how much Zakat Allah has enjoined on me." The narrator added: Then, Allah's Messenger PBUH informed him all about the Laws (i.e. fundamentals) of Islam. The bedouin then said, "By Him Who has honoured you, I will neither perorm any Nawafil nor will I decrease what Allah has enjoined on me." Allah's Messenger PBUH said, "If he is saying the truth, he will succeed (or he will be granted Paradise)." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No.115, Vol.3).

45. The Saum (Fast) is for Allah

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger PBUH said, "As-Siyam (the fasting) is Junnah (protection or shield or a screen or a shelter from the Hell-fire*). So, the person observing Saum (fast) should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should say to him twice, 'I am fasting.' "The Prophet PBUH added, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better with Allah -ta-Aala than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), 'He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The Saum (fast) is for Me.** So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No.118, Vol.3)

* See Fath Al-Bari, Vol. 5, Page 5.

** Although all practices of worshipping are for Allah, here Allah -ta-Aala singles out Saum (fast) because fasting cannot be practiced for the sake of showing-off, as nobody except Allah can know whether one is fasting or not. Therefore, fasting is a pure perormance that cannot be blemished with hypocrisy. (Fath Al-Bari, Vol.5 Page 10).

46. Fasting is to give up all evil actions

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: The Prophet PBUH said, "Whoever does not give up lying speech - false statements (i.e. telling lies) and acting on those (lies), and evil actions etc., then Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting*)". (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No.127, Vol.3)

47. The essence of Nawafil prayer

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu Anh: Allah's Messenger PBUH said, "Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil till I love him. Then I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My Protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge), and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.8, Hadith No.509).

48. Obligation of Zakat: Ibn 'Abbas Radiyallahu Anhuma narrated that Mu'adh Radiyallahu Anh said: "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent me (as a governor of Yemen) and instructed me: 'You will be going to Christian and Jewish Community. Invite them first to testify that there is no true God but Allah, and that I am (Prophet Muhammad [Peace be upon Him]) the Messenger of Allah. If they accept this, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five prayers during the day and the night; and if they obey, then tell them that Allah has made Zakat obligatory for them to be collected from their rich and distrubuted among their poor; and if they obey, then beware of taking the best of their properties, and be ware of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah."' As he saw me he said: "By the Rubb of the Ka'bah, they are the losers." I sat and I could not stay (longer) and (then) stood up. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransom for you, who are they (the losers)?". He said: "They are those who have a huge amount of wealth, except those who give out in charity (those who spend their wealth generously on them whom they find in fron of them, behind them and on their right side and on their left side), and they are a few. No owner of camels or cows or goats and sheep, who doest not pay Zakat (would be spared punishment) but these (camles, cows, goats and sheep) shall come on the Day of Resurrection wearing more flesh and to gore him with their horns and trample him with their hooves. And when the last one tramples him, the first one will return (to trample him) and so on until all people are finally judged." (Source: Summarized Sahih Muslim, No. 506, Volume 1)
