In the worst AIDS-affected villages around Lake Victoria, numerous households include orphaned children.

Some are cared for by relatives. Some find places in special programmes for orphans. And some fend for themselves, turning their hands to a variety of small enterprises - sewing, goat-tending -tosupport themselves, and perhaps younger brothers and sisters
